When choosing a destination for learning English courses in UK, what better choice is there than London? Options for English courses in London are numerous and the city houses some of the oldest and most respected colleges and universities in the world. If you desire to learn English, the sensible choice would be to go to the country where the language originated.

As with anywhere, there are many different dialects in English. English will also vary by country as English speaking countries, like the United States and the UK, the language differs in many ways even though the foundation of their speech is the same. Many aspects of the language will vary depending on what soil you are standing on, including variations in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and spelling.

Often the spelling of words in UK English will add a “u” in the middle of the word. Examples include favourite and honour, where in America these are spelled without the “u”. In England, if you are searching for the toilet you would ask to use the loo or wc, which is short for water closet. In the States, you would be looking for a bathroom or restroom. French fries in the UK are chips, while petrol in the U.S. is called gas or gasoline. The differences are slight but can be confusing if you are not aware of them.

London is the multicultural epicentre and capital for the UK and England. London’s metropolitan area houses somewhere around 14 million people. The city itself is settled on the River Thames and is one of the world’s most important cities in terms of culture, history, politics, finance, and trends. London is truly a must see destination littered with tourist attractions and historical monuments. For those interested in England’s royals, the Buckingham Palace is the place to be. History buffs will need to visit the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Beautiful churches and cathedrals are everywhere including the famous Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
