How do we speak a language fluently
August 11th, 2010 by admin
To achieve fluency in a language and learn a language quickly, it will not suffice to learn in a passive way, i.e. with just listening and reading. You must begin to speak that language actively to accelerate your progress.
First, practice. Buy audio language books, such as Rosetta Stone, that require you to put yourself in a situation and say phrases in the target language. You will then be able to use the language without consciously going through the translation of words from your mother tongue.
Once you’ve learned a few key words and phrases, meet native speakers. Try to get in touch with people who speak your target language through the cultural centers and embassies.
You will be surprised to find people where you live who are ready and willing to help you improve your language. Consider visiting the language department or section that deals with foreign students at your university and ask if there are students who speak the language you want to learn. These students will generally appreciate this kind of meeting and you will quickly become friends. Plan activities together, cook traditional dishes from your country, or invite them to spend the holidays with your family.
Beyond the university, you can place ads on Craigslist expressing your desire to practice your language. Generally, getting to know one native, you will have the opportunity to meet dozens of others.
When you do not know a word, ask your partner. When you do not understand a word he uses, ask him.You can also tell him to correct your mistakes. If you think he does not correct your mistakes out of politeness, take a long sentence and ask him to correct your mistakes in this sentence. Write this sentence in one of your flashcards and ask them to verify it.
Take every opportunity to meet with a native speaker to learn something new about the language. For this you should bring with you a notebook wherever you go!
