Looking Back On Life – One Day Not Too Long Ago
April 27th, 2010 by admin
The majority of us struggle financially when we are first starting out in one way or another. I sure know I did. Life with having poor credit and not knowing where the next paycheck was going to come from what quite a challenge. We got through it all though. Sometimes, I think back and wonder how we ever made it.
In fact, the other day I had the chance to sit on my front porch swing for a while and relax in the summer breeze. I leaned back with my eyes closed and listened to the sounds all around me as my mind drifted back in time to those earlier days in my life when things were not always that easy, but man how they were a lot simpler than they are now.
I remembered the little one bedroom apartment I had with a box spring and mattress on the floor and an old beat up chest of drawers that my brother had given me. The drawers did not close right and if you were not careful they would fall completely out. The strange thing is as much as I hated that dang piece of furniture back then, do you know I still have it in my bedroom today?
That is just one of those pieces of furniture that I can not let go of. Of course, I have never fixed the drawers and I never plan on it either.
In my living room was a sofa I had paid ten dollars for and I had a sheet tossed over it so it did not look that bad. I had a cheap television set, which sat on four milk crates that one of the local convenient stores so humbly donated to my needy cause.
My most prized possession was my computer, which a friend gave me. I had it set up in my bedroom on a sleeping bag with the Incredible Hulk guarding it. I did not think anyone would break in my apartment especially since it only took me less than thirty minutes to move completely in, but just in case I had my security system in place and ready to attack.
In the little area of town that I lived I soon learned that the normal schedule for trash pick up was on Wednesday morning. So, on Tuesday nights I began driving around my neighborhood looking at what my ‘rich’ neighbors were tossing out that might be of some use to me. Well the very first night I was in luck!!!!
I found a great little cabinet. I got out of my truck grabbed it and brought it home. It was not a computer desk, but that was what I was going to make out of it. After I altered it just a bit I soon had the perfect computer desk and I was in business, but I still did not have a computer chair. Oh well, beggars can not be choosers can they?
The next week, I went in the other direction and found an old desk chair, a stool, and a lamp. The stool was ripped as was the chair, but they looked brand new in my eyes…
Once again I took them home and cleaned them up. I noticed that the rips were from burns, but for now they would have to stay there. The arms on the chair were really lose so I took the arms off and got some bigger screws and reattached the arms so they would no longer move around. The little lamp did not have shade, but when I put a light bulb in it and placed it behind my computer it gave me all the light I needed.
I looked at my new findings and noticed that I now had my own little office and it had not cost me a dime. Here is was someone who could not get financing for a car and I had a brand new office!!!
