Writing a Eulogy For a Grandparent

    April 22nd, 2010 by admin

Grandparents are a family’s greatest treasure, the founders of a loving legacy, The greatest storytellers, the keepers of traditions that linger on in cherished memory. Grandparents are the family’s strong foundation. Their very special love sets them apart. Through happiness and sorrow, through their special love and caring, grandparents keep a family close at heart. ~author unknown

Sadly, many of us will have to write a eulogy for grandparent at least once in our lifetime.  When faced with this daunting task you may think to yourself how do I do this wonderful person justice with simple words.  Writing a eulogy for a grandparent is never easy but it gives you the chance to highlight everything about your grandparent that made them special to you.  Reminding friends and family of the life that your grandparent lived and the lives that they touched while with us is a huge honor.

Pick favorite memories from your time spent with your grandparent, and times you’ve witnessed others sharing with your grandparent.  Talk personally about what your grandparent meant to you.  Tell funny or sentimental stories about your grandparent.  Gather as much information as possible about your grandparent by talking to other family members, this will also help you all to remember them in positive ways.

Now that you have as much information about your grandparent as possible it’s time to start writing out what you would like to say.  You might want to remember to write in a large print or use a large font so that it is easy to see the paper from an arm’s length away.  Once you are satisfied with what you have written you may want to rehearse reading the eulogy for your grandparent in front of a friend or a family member or at the very least in front of a mirror.  This will help you realize if you need to change or add anything.  After you have reviewed the eulogy and you are happy with it, think about how you will keep it together long enough to actually read it in front of everyone.  If there is any question as to whether or not you will be able to deliver the eulogy for grandparent ask another close friend or family member if they will be there to support you and possibly take over if you find that you just cannot get through it.

Remember as hard as it is to lose this person that has been so important to your life, this is your chance to honor them by reciting the absolute best eulogy for a grandparent possible.
